Carmel “Connie” Consiglio Flegert, 95, of Hamden, former resident of North Haven for 35 years passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Benchmark Senior Living in Hamden with family by her side. She was the wife of 50 years to the late Arthur Flegert. Connie was born in New Haven on September 19, 1919, daughter of the late Gennaro and Filomena Pepe Consiglio. Connie retired from Burger King after more than 25 years where she made lifelong friends. Prior to that, she worked at Sally’s Apizza on Wooster Street for many years in the family business. Wherever Connie went, she was frequently recognized by former patrons of both restaurants; they all remembered her kindness to the public. At her residence at Benchmark Senior Living, she quickly made many friends; Connie’s family will be forever grateful for the wonderful care she received there. Connie was an avid sports fan. She loved the NY Yankees and UCONN basketball. She was an excellent cook, and devoted mother and grandmother. Mother of Debby (Paul) Balisciano of East Haven and Elizabeth (Jack) O’Donnell of North Haven. She leaves cherished memories to her beloved grandchildren Emily & Brian Balisciano, Jillian (Joseph) Sacco, Katherine, Lauren and James O’Donnell. Sister of Sara Vecchio, Rose Lanziero and the late Salvatore, Anthony, Andrew, Luca and Frances Consiglio. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Her funeral procession to the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, Friday morning 9:30. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Barnabas Church at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. The visiting hours will be Thursday from 5 to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Connie’s memory can be made to VITAS Hospice Care, 199 Park Road Extension, Suite 102, Middlebury, CT 06762
I knew Connie from Benchmark, though I just started back in August, I liked her a lot! May she fly with the Angels!
My favorite "Yankees" fan, I'll always treasure the special times we got to talk and watch your yanks play ball. You knew who was pitching and whether he was a "bum" or "he's alright". I can still hear you telling me about your favorite players/manager; Joey Pepitone, Andy Pettitte, Joe Dimaggio, Joe Torre, "All good Italian boys, Oh yeah". Or what you described as "I call the shots", predicting (with uncanny success) who would win a game, series, or division.
Our family really enjoyed our visits with you. You always made us feel so welcome. Listening how proud you were of your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. relating stories about each of them as you progressed through the "Art Gallery" of pictures and saved art work on your refrigerator door. It's no wonder your signature song was –"You are my Sunshine". Your love and kindeness brightened all those whom were lucky enough to know you. Know that as they lay you to rest today, your light still shines brightly with us all. We love you so.
Dear Family and Friends,
I'm sorry for your loss. I just wanted to leave you with an encouraging scripture that has helped me deal with the loss of a loved one. It is found in the Bible Book of Acts 24:15 and it reads, "And I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."
