Alfred Giovannini, 92, of Orange and formerly of West Haven and New Haven, passed into eternal rest on Monday, September 5, 2016. He was born in New Haven on November 1, 1923 to the late Giuseppe and Maria Sante Giovannini. Alfred served as a Staff Sergeant with the United States Army Air Force from 1943-1946 with the 464th Fighter Squadron, where he inspected, repaired and maintained P47’s. He was educated in the military at the Airplane Mechanic School at Roosevelt Field in New York. Following his discharge he was employed by Sikorsky Aircraft for over 30 years. During this employment he traveled the world repairing and testing the performance of helicopters in extreme weather conditions; most notably, the Black Hawk. One of his most memorable project locations was Vietnam, where he completed three assignments during the Vietnam War. Alfred was an enthusiastic golfer and beach lover. Upon retirement, he spent many winter months in West Palm Beach, Florida. His favorite vacation spot was Bermuda. Alfred leaves behind his devoted daughter, Maria Angela Giovannini, and grandson, Steven Michael Turbert, Jr. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his two sisters, Anne Vinci and Vera Giovannini, and two brothers, Fredrick Giovannini and Donald Gray.

Family and friends are invited to go directly to St. Anthony’s Church, 70 Washington Avenue, New Haven on Friday morning at 10:00 to attend a Mass of Christian burial and are also invited to attend the committal services with full military honors immediately following in All Saints Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. The North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue has been entrusted with the arrangements.
