We have lost a true newsman who earned the trust of many. Street smart, gruff–when you needed to be, and always on the side of the little guy. You were all heart, Johnny Mong–and you kept us honest–and laughing. I will always remember you with a wise comment on your lips, a smile on your face and a camera in your hand. Rest in Peace, my friend.
John,
While we didn’t always see eye to eye, you were always a gentleman. Don’t think that I didn’t know that it was you who was behind all the coverage backing me up when I got sick as a medic. Thanks for that. I saw you at St. Rays what 6 months ago and you looked good. I am sorry to see you go my friend. My prayers and best wishes to your family. You were truly one of a kind. RIP John
I met your Dad when I first started working at the Register in ’68 as a ‘cub’ reporter. I remember the night he came to my rescue during the Grateful Dead concert/riot at Yale Bowl. I was getting jammed up by two cops who thought I was somehow connected to the riot because I had a walkie-talkie. John came out of the pepper fog in his Caddi and said “he’s alright, he’s with me” and that was enough for the cops. That’s the kind of guy your Dad was . . . Funny, I later wound up working with those same cops! Your Dad was a real nice guy. I’m sorry to hear he’s passed. May he rest in peace.
Johnny Mong – My family and I were very sad to hear of your passing. You are now with the Angels watching over us. May you rest in peace. xoxo
