Sophie Persak Plachtyna, 92, of North Haven, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Arden House Care & Rehab Center, Hamden with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late John Plachtyna. Born in New Haven on March 1, 1921; daughter of the late John and Lillian Hanachewska Persak and had worked as a secretary for Connecticut Paving. Sophie was a past president of the Immaculate Conception Society and was very active in St. Michael’s Ukrainian Church. Mother of Dr. John (Rosemary) Plachtyna and Lillian Plachtyna. Grandmother of Steven Plachtyna and Jonathan Caragnano. Predeceased by a brother William Persak. The family would like to thank the home health aides and the staff at the Arden House for the great care that was given to Sophie.
Family and friends are invited to go directly to St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church, 569 George Street, New Haven on Wednesday morning at 11:00 to attend a mass of Christian burial and are also invited to attend the committal services immediately following in All Saints Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, CT Chapter, 2075 Silas Deane Hwy., Suite#100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067. The North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue has been entrusted with the arrangements.

John and Lily, We are very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I always enjoyed visiting Aunt Sophie in Connecticut as well as our cousins! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.
So sorry for your loss. Sophie was a lovely lady. I knew her growing up as my brother in law was her brother Bill who had married my sister, Jane. At that time, they lived in New Haven on Landers St. in the house her parents owned.
So sorry for your loss, I have fond childhood memories of visitng Aunt Sophie in Connecticut.
