Margaret Slavin Poppendieck of North Haven (formerly of West Haven), passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at her daughter’s home in Wallingford surrounded by her loving family. Born in New Haven on March 12, 1930; daughter of the late James and Catherine (Carey) Slavin. She was the beloved wife of the late John Robert Poppendieck. Peggy graduated in 1948 from Commercial High School in New Haven and worked for Sears Roebuck Company in West Haven retiring in the 1980’s. She traveled to Ireland, England and Israel as well as several states on the East Coast. In her past time she enjoyed sewing, babysitting, watching the UCONN Girls and playing cards with her friends at Woods Edge in North Haven. She leaves behind three children, Kathe (Jack) Wynne, Karen (Ernie) Cipolli, both of Wallingford, and Robert (Donna) Poppendieck of West Haven. She also leaves three grandchildren all of Wallingford, Katie Cipolli (fiancé Jay Quigley), Ernie Cipolli III, John Cipolli and one great-grandson Jay Quigley whom she adored. She is survived by two sisters, Elinor Donat of East Haven, Sheila (Richard) Livieri of Hamden, brother James (Barbara) Slavin of Guilford, sister-in-law Lynne Slavin of New Haven and many loving nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a sister Dottie Guarino and brother Jerry Slavin. She also leaves behind many special friends, especially childhood classmates Edna Crisafi, Mary Harmon and Marlene Torre. The family would like to extend a special “Thank You†to Dr. Martin Katz and his staff; also the staff of the Masonicare Hospice of Wallingford.
Her funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, Saturday morning at 10:00. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Barnabas Church at 10:30. Entombment will follow in the St. Lawrence Mausoleum. The visiting hours will be Friday (TODAY) from 5 to 8 pm. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Masonicare Hospice, 22 Masonic Ave., Wallingford, CT 06492.

Peg was a lovely person with such a love for life and her family. I came to know her as a sewing client but quickly found that we had many connections through family and friends. It is truly a small world. She was a wonderful person and will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!
