Dr. Harry J. Whitney, 69, of North Haven passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2015 after a long illness.  He was the husband of twenty years to Grace-Ann Caruso Whitney and father of Marian Caruso Whitney.  Dr. Whitney was born in New Haven on December 24, 1945; son of the late Harry E. and Josephine Cortiglio Whitney.  He earned his Bachelor degree from the former Quinnipiac College, his Master’s degree from The University of Connecticut School of Social Work and his PhD in Clinical Social Work from New York University.  After college he worked with the Peace Corps.  Dr. Whitney had worked as a psychotherapist for several clinics and hospitals in the New Haven area and Poughkeepsie, NY and also had a private practice in New Haven for many years.  Dr. Whitney was a frequent participant in educational activities at the Yale Child Study Center, the New Haven Psychoanalyst Institute and the Austin Riggs Center in Stockbridge, MA. He enjoyed reading, walking, fishing and classical music.  He will be missed by family and friends.

His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, Monday morning at 9:30. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Mary Church, 5 Hillhouse Ave, New Haven at 10:00. Interment will follow in the North Haven Center Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dominican Friars, Provence of St. Joseph, 141 East 65th Street, New York, NY  10065.
