Ludger Michael Girard, 92, of Cheshire CT passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Masonicare Hospice on August 23, 2016. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Suzanne (Smith) Girard, his 3 children, Nancee Giannini and husband Louis of Manchester, Augusta Girard and husband William Notaro of Cheshire and his son Stanley Girard and wife Barbara of Northford. Ludger found great happiness in his 6 grandchildren, Amy Rutar, Maureen Chicchetti, Kris Notaro, Kevin Notaro, Justin Girard and Corey Girard all of CT. His life was made even fuller with the addition of his six great-grandchildren and the anticipation of the arrival of a new great-granddaughter in November. He is also survived by his goddaughter Karen Jordan of California and godson Christopher Jones of Ohio, who were both a special part of his life. He leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, especially Suzanne Girard who remained very close to her Aunt and Uncle, and numerous friends with whom he shared many happy moments. Ludger was born in Lincoln RI in 1923. His family moved to Foxon CT where he grew up on the family farm.  He served as a Technician in the United States Army during World War II, stationed in the Philippines.   Ludger was a long time parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church in Hamden, where he and his wife lived for sixty-four years and raised their family.  He retired thirty-three years ago from his long time job as a truck driver for St. Johnsbury. He was an active member of AMVETS post nine and worked as a volunteer, along with his wife, at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in West Haven for many years. Ludger was predeceased by his nine brothers and four sisters, his parents Osias and Albina Girard, and several other family members including his son-in-law, Joseph Cataldo Jr.  He was happiest surrounded by his family, especially when called to help with any projects. He could fix almost anything and loved a challenge. It never took much to make him happy and most times he wore a smile. He was described by all that knew him as quiet, gentle and very kind man with a strong work ethic who was always ready to offer help when needed. He will be dearly missed by all.

His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue Monday morning August 29th at 9:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Barnabas Church at 10:00. After Mass he will then be laid to rest in All Saints Cemetery. The visitation will be Sunday August 28th from 4-6 pm. In lieu of flowers a Memorial Donation may be made in Ludger’s name to Connecticut Food Bank, 2 Research Parkway, Wallingford, CT 06492 or Masonicare Home Health and Hospice, 104 South Turnpike, Wallingford, CT 06492.
