John Sherban, 86, of North Branford passed away Sunday December 30, 2012 at Masonicare in Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Rita Rieger Sherban. Born in Vonda, Saskatchewan Canada on July 31, 1926; son of the late Peter and Pearl Pryma Sherban. John was the owner/operator of the former Sherban Water systems until his retirement; had a long career playing professional hockey in Canada, Scotland and the USA, finishing his career with the New Haven Blades and Bridgeport Oilers. As a New Haven Blades player he was the “S” in the famous “CBS” line along with Ivan Chasle and Claude Boileau during the Blades 1955-56 championship season. He was an avid golfer and held memberships at Lyman Orchards and Wallingford Country Club at various times. He also enjoyed with pride his cherished grandchildren, Rory, Gavin and Rita Sherban. Father of Scott Sherban and his wife Margaret Augur of Northford, Daniel Sherban and his late wife Dawn Stroud Sherban of South Dakota. Brother of Dan(Marie) Sherban of New Haven, George (Frances) Sherban of Saskatoon, Canada and the late William and Michael Sherban, Mary Borowsky, Anne Sherban, Jean Sloboda, and Sally Roberts. A special thanks goes to the Masonicare Famly for the outstanding care and compassion shown to John during his stay with them.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, Thursday morning at 10:30. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 8:00 to 10:00 am. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Augustine Church at 11:00. Interment will be private in All Saints Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
