Eugene A. Scialla, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at The Arden House, Hamden. He was the husband of the late Violet Kazynoski Scialla. Gene was born on March 29, 1926 in New Haven; son of the late Carmine Scialla and Martha Gaudio Scialla. Gene is a US Navy veteran, serving for 3 years on the USS Duncan DDR as a flagman. His naval tour was in the Pacific, escorting aircraft carriers, during which time he experienced the Great Wall of China and Shanghai. Gene then entered a local career in the automobile parts industry. After serving as Parts Department Manager at A-1 Toyota in New Haven for 23 years, Gene “retired” and then worked at Anderson Automotive, Inc. in West Haven for another 10 years. He is a former resident of East Haven where he was involved with local sports and gridiron clubs. Afterwards, he resided in Ansonia and Orange, before The Arden House in Hamden in 2008. Gene enjoyed watching his grandson Justin play little league, soccer and tennis, and his granddaughter Lindsey Violet swimming, running track and cross-country. Gene was an avid fan of the UConn Girls, NY Yankees and NY Giants. His recreation included golf, bowling, mushrooming, crabbing, card-games, and lots of Italian food. Father of Cathy (Keith) Anderson of Orange, and Robert Scialla (Keith Brown) of Providence RI; exceedingly proud grandfather of Justin Anderson of Milford and Lindsey Violet Anderson of Orange. Gene is the younger brother of the late Helen (Vincent) Fiasconaro of East Haven, and the older brother of Gloria Cocchiaro of East Haven, and Kenneth (Carole) Scialla of Enfield. He is the proud uncle and great-uncle of numerous nieces and nephews, and an extension of local cousins.
A memorial gathering will be held at the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 4pm to 7pm. A private interment will follow at a later date at All Saint’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Arden House, Attention Financial Department, 850 Mix Avenue, Hamden CT 06514-2102, in memory of Eugene Scialla for residents activity account. The family of Gene Scialla wishes to extend its admiration and gratitude to the staff at The Arden House, particularly unit 3CD, for their loving care and attention for the past five years.
