Walter F. Mullen, 94, of North Haven, Hobe Sound and Port St. Lucie FL died on Saturday, December 20, 2014.  He was born in North Haven on November 14, 1920 to the late John and Rose Bruder Mullen.  He was predeceased by his first wife, Janet Cooper Mullen and siblings Evelyn, John and Marion.

He is survived by his second wife, Lorraine Gillis Mullen of Port St. Lucie and his sister Helen Gordon of Hobe Sound, as well as his children:  Karen Mullen Sylvia and her spouse Avery Smith; Thomas Mullen and his spouse Denise; Brian Mullen and his spouse Stephen Shura.  Walter is also survived by his grandchildren:  Alexa Mullen; Andrew Sylvia and his spouse Jacqueline; Matthew Sylvia and his spouse Nancy; Jon Mullen.  Great-Grandchildren include Cody, Alyssa and Kelsey.

Walter enlisted in the Army during World War II, serving in the Philippians.  He reached the rank of Staff Sargent.  He played semi-professional baseball with the North Haven A’s and was instrumental in the early stages of the Little League program in North Haven.  He was also a volunteer at the old Center Fire Department in North Haven.  For many years he held the high three string duck-pin series at the lanes located in the basement of the old North Haven Community Center.  He was a long time and active member of St. Barnabas Church in North Haven.

He worked for forty years as an off-set printer with the Ideal Printing Company, Long Wharf, New Haven.  Walter’s dream was to be able to retire to Florida, which he did in 1987.  He had taken up golf again in his later life and had a hole-in-one on the Martin County Golf Course.             His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue Saturday morning at 9:30. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Barnabas Church at 10:00.  Internment with full military honors will follow in All Saint’s Cemetery.
