John Gerald Matheis, 82, of North Haven, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014 at the CT Hospice, Branford. Husband of the late Adeline (Butera) Matheis. Born in Erie, PA on April 25, 1931; son of the late George Edward and Marie Quinn Matheis. He had served his country faithfully in the US Airforce and had worked in the Rapid Transit Industry all of his working life, most notably starting with Westinghouse and was the president and CEO of Stone Safety Corp. in Wallingford and was the Regional Manager of ADTRANZ. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and building model airplanes, and was an avid fan of UCONN Women’s Basketball. John also enjoyed spending his winters in Florida. Father of John G. Matheis, Jr., of New Britain, Barbara Levine and Christine Parisella both of North Haven. Step-Father of Kimberly (Al Cavuoti) Ardito, Michael (Diane) LaRock both of Wallingford, John (Chamagne) LaRock of Meriden and Theresa (Peter Grimm) Torino of Southbury. Grandfather of Patrick Matheis, Scott Fee, Kelly Fee, April Benavides, Amy Limmer, Danielle Levine and Christopher Parisella. Step-Grandfather of Nick Ardito, AJ Ardito, Danielle LaRock, Keith LaRock, Jason LaRock, Robbie Torino, Nicole Torino, Samantha Torino, Jessica LaRock and Baily LaRock. Uncle of Cynthia Fiske, Patricia Stempka, Mary Leah Muroski, Margaret Matheis, Pamela Matheis, Carol Horner and Daniel Snell. Also survived by 13 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his first wife Jennie Adeline Norman Matheis, brothers, Edward and Hugh Matheis, sister Margaret (Sis) Snell and his stepson Donald LaRock, Jr.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, North Haven Thursday morning at 9:30. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Francis Cabrini Church at 10:00. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. The visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the CT Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.

John was such a gracious awesome man who was loved dearly by many but my wait staff adored him.. I am glad I saw him and spent time with him every time he passed through.. RIP buddy.. We will miss you… PS let me know how the Chicken Marsala is up there!! Xoxo Condolenses to the family …

My condolences to all who knew and loved Jack, especially his children. Jackie was the last Matheis of his generation in our immediate family. I will always treasure his sense of humor and the memories he shared and passed to me about our family and days in Erie.
