Alexander B. Porter, Sr., 92, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2020 from Covid related pneumonia. Alexander was born in Brooklyn, New York. Alexander always enjoyed an athletic challenge. He learned to play tennis at age 45. He became a tennis instructor, and upon his retirement from the Board of Education in 1985, he served as a NY Junior Tennis League (NYJTL) site director for 20 years in Brooklyn, New York. He figure skated for 20 years at Abe Stark skating rink in Brooklyn with his daughter. He overcame a fear of water and learned to swim at age 80. He enjoyed water aerobics classes at McBurney Y in New York City. He loved bowling and at age 89 he bowled a 280 game at Homefield Bowl in Yonkers, NY. He won many medals at the New York State Senior Olympic Games in bowling and tennis. He never turned down an opportunity to cut the rug and he loved desserts and Italian food. He served in the Army in the 1940’s as a communications systems installer in the Philippines and came to love the people there. On the G.I. Bill he studied men’s tailoring but was frustratingly unable to secure employment in the fashion industry. After a series of jobs he was hired by the NYC Board of Education’s Bureau of Supplies to purchase heavy equipment for the school system. He is predeceased by Bessie Porter, his wife of 53 years. He is survived by his son, Alex Porter Jr. and daughter Dena Wallerson. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends and family as a dapper gentleman who loved helping young people achieve their dreams.
