Bernard “Bernie” Paul FitzGerald, age 75, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016 at the Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center Nursing Home in Meriden peacefully with his family by his side. Born in Bridgeport on November 4, 1941; son of the late Desmond and Helen FitzGerald. Bernie was a graduate of Fairfield University. He was deeply religious and an active member of St. Frances Cabrini Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister and taught religious education for 20 years. He was the recipient of the St. Joseph Award. Bernie was an avid sports fan; loving Fairfield University, the New York Mets and the New York Giants. Surviving are his beloved wife of 47 years, Kristen FitzGerald; son, Paul FitzGerald and daughter-in-law Lisa FitzGerald of Meriden; daughter, Kerri Clark and son-in-law John Clark of Cromwell; son, Garrett FitzGerald and daughter-in-law Marissa FitzGerald of North Brunswick, NJ; and 5 beautiful grandchildren: Makenna FitzGerald, Madison Clark, John Clark, Kellyn FitzGerald and Dylan FitzGerald. He is also survived by his sister Susan Gavin and two nephews, Michael Gavin and Shane Gavin of Milford.. The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to all the nurses and staff at the Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center Nursing Home for the excellent care and comfort they provided to Bernie over the past two years.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue Wednesday morning, Nov. 23rd at 10:30. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Church of the Resurrection, Wallingford at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. The visiting hours will be Tuesday, Nov. 22nd from 4 to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center Nursing Home, 65 Westfield Road, Meriden, CT 06450.
