Edward M. Fitzgerald, 89, of North Haven, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 30th, 2023, at Yale New Haven Hospital with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of 65 years to Joan Kennedy Fitzgerald. Ed was born in Cobh, County Cork, Ireland on January 8th, 1934, and was the son of the late Thomas P. and Mary Sullivan Fitzgerald. A graduate of St. Mary’s High School and Quinnipiac University, Ed retired from General Electric Company as Manager of Foreign Property and Casualty Insurance in which capacity he traveled worldwide, many times with his beloved wife. Ed was very involved in the North Haven Community activities, he served as a Weblos Scout Leader, Little League Coach, member of the Orchard Hill Junior High School Building Committee and was a 12 year member of the Board of Police Commissioners. He was also a Past President of the Police Commissioners Association of Connecticut. Ed was chosen to be inducted into the New Haven Gridiron Club’s “All District Hall of Fame”. He was an active parishioner of St. Frances Cabrini Church and for many years served as an usher, lecturer, member of the finance committee, parish council, President of the Men’s Club, and a Eucharistic minister. Ed was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus and holds membership in the American Legion (Post 0008) and the Hamden/North Haven Elks. During the Korean War, Ed served in the US Navy and was assigned to the Pacific Coast Seabee Battalion located at Port Huneme, California. Father of Stephen M. Fitzgerald (Christal), Mark K. Fitzgerald (Laurie) and Maura A. Welch (John). Grandfather of Evan Welch (Chelsey), Laura Welch, Elise Fitzgerald, Megan Tortoriello (Patrick) and Madalynn Fitzgerald. Brother of Thomas Fitzgerald and the late John Fitzgerald. Great grandfather of Kennedy Tortoriello.
Private services have been entrusted to The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue.
My sincere condolences to the Fitzgerald family. Ed was the Police Commissioner who swore me in as a patrolman in 1973. He was a true professional and a gentleman. Ed followed my career and I am grateful for all his support over the years. R.I.P. Commissioner Fitzgerald.
