Irene Virginia DiFabbio Mel, 87, of Wallingford formerly of Montowese Avenue, North Haven, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Masonicare Health Center, Wallingford.  She was the beloved wife of the late Morris J. Mel.  Irene was born in New Haven on July 17, 1930 and was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Nellie Ferrie DiFabbio.   She had worked for US Surgical for many years until her retirement.  Irene enjoyed cooking and baking, was an avid New York Yankees and UCONN Women’s basketball fan but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her great-granddaughter whom she loved all unconditionally.  Mother of John (Andrea) Mel and Linda (Donald) Wolf.  Grandmother of Brittany (Harry) Dadio, Stephanie (Jeffrey) Warner, Justin (Mallory) Wolf, Corbin Wolf and Nicholas Mel.  Great-Grandmother of Madison Grace Warner.  Sister of Margaret Bigelow and the late Elsie Vederame, Chris DiFabbio, Dorothy Vaccino, Helen DeLuigi, Vincent, Pasquale and Arthur DiFabbio.   Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  The family would like to extend a “Special Thank You” to Wooster 3E at the Masonicare Health Center for all the care and compassion shown to Irene and their family.

Her funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, Wednesday morning, March 28th at 11:00. Family and friends may call from 9:00 to 11:00 am.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Therese Church at 11:30.  Entombment will follow in the All Saints Mausoleum.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 200 Executive Blvd. Suite 4B, Southington, CT 06489.
