James F. Shumway, Sr., 74, of North Haven, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021.  He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline Lanius Shumway.  James was born in Alexandria, Virginia on April 4, 1947, the son of the late George and Lillian Clough Shumway.  He attended Randolf-Macon College in Virginia pursuing a Bachelors degree. His time in college was interrupted by his voluntary faithful service in the US Army during the Vietnam era. After the Army he returned to Randolf-Macon, earning his degree in Liberal Arts and Business. After college James worked in sales and marketing at the Stouffer’s Hotel in New York, then as the General Manager at the Conference Center at Fairfield University for 14 years, later briefly as the General Manger at the Holiday Inn hotel in New Haven, and finally for Mory’s in New Haven as the General Manager. After retiring he enjoyed a part-time job coaching with WW. James was a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where he sang in choir for many years. James enjoyed golfing, traveling, reading, and cheering on the Washington Football Team through thick and thin. His kindness, warmth, wit, and ever-welcoming spirit will be missed by all who knew him short or long term. Father of James (Trisha) Shumway Jr., Karl J. Zeilik and Christopher M. Zeilik, newly Grandfather of Lane Shumway.  Sister of Sarah Stangle. Nephews Clay and Chris Stangle. Predeceased by his first wife Diane Shumway.  

The visiting hours will be on Friday, July 16th from 4 to 7 PM at The Havens Family, North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue.  Family and friends are invited to go directly to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 3 Trumbull Place, North Haven on Saturday morning, July 17th at 11:00 to attend a funeral service. Military honors will be rendered outside the church at the conclusion of the funeral service.
