John G. Ahern, 88, of Wallingford, beloved husband of the late Maryellen (Pickering) Ahern, was in his home on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023, when he was peacefully called into heaven.  He was a devout follower of Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. John was born on February 22, 1935, in New Haven. Son of the late James and Mary Walsh Ahern. Father of John Ahern (Gina Murray), Kelly Bonito (Anthony), James Ahern (Laura Neumon) and Kevin Ahern (Janice Simjian-Jones). In 1993, he and his late wife settled in Wallingford and were blessed with eight loving grandchildren, Maryellen and Joseph Bonito, followed by Paige, Collin, Kaitlin, Madison, Cameron, and Megan Ahern.  He was especially proud to be a father and grandfather, and always had a significant part in the development of the lives of his grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, including his former daughter in-laws, Debra Ahern and Amy Ahern who still remained close to his heart throughout the years.  He was predeceased by his siblings, Mary Rowe, Julia Willett, Margaret McMahon, Eileen Stackpole, Stephen P., James F., Timothy R.  and William J. Ahern.  John proudly served on the New Haven Police Department for many years as a motorcycle policeman and retiring as a Sergeant. Later he pursued a career as a builder and developer for many years until his retirement. It was through lifelong friendships that John made a lasting impact on the City of New Haven and surrounding communities as he played a strong hand in the development of many residential and commercial properties.  John was known to enjoy visitors at the house at all hours of the day and night along with hosting extravagant holiday celebrations with the help of his beloved wife, Maryellen.  He prided himself on maintaining a well-heated household as he was the keeper of the fire around the clock; evidenced by the large wood piles he split and stocked himself found behind the house.  John enjoyed woodworking, chopping firewood but most of all, spoiling his grandchildren whom he loved unconditionally. John was a loving and caring man whose sole purpose was to provide a good life for his wife and family; he will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
