Louis A. Messina, 79 of New Haven passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at CT Hospice with his family by his side after a valiant battle with cancer.  Louis was born in New Haven on July 22,1943, the son of the late Salvatore and Frances Corso Messina. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Jo-Ann Manzi Messina. 

 Louis’ greatest attribute was service to others and making people laugh given his loving and humorous nature. He was a talented home chef known especially for his famous tomato sauce. Louis won the St. Bernadette Church Sauce Contest twice. He dedicated his cooking skills to every organization to which he belonged including: the US Army Reserve, Cub Scout Pack #25 (St. Bernadette’s Church -24 years), Boy Scout Troop #401(Old Stone Church -20 years), and as a life-long member of the New Haven Sportman’s Club. He also prepared food for the homeless as a member of the Knights of Columbus Rodrigo Council #44. 

 Louis was a man of mechanical aptitude whose career spanned 47 years. He was employed at the former Somer’s Pontiac, the City of New Haven Public Works Department, and the William Hotchkiss Company.  Louis retired after managing the New Haven Savings Bank Corporate Office building for 22 years.

He was the father of Salvatore L. (Jessica) Messina and Laura E. Messina, and the adored “Pop” of Lydia and Esther Messina.  Brother of Joanne (Frank) Annnunziato.  Also survived by nieces and nephews.

 The visiting hours will be Monday, April 10, 2023 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, North Haven, CT.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Bernadette Church,385 Townsend Avenue, New Haven CT, on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Interment with full military honors will follow at All Saints Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital- https://www.stjude.org/donate/
