It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Martin Douglas Wakefield, age 62, on April 11, 2023, at his home in Wallingford, CT after a courageous seven year battle with cancer.
Marty was born on July 5, 1960 in New Haven to parents Sylvia (Kohn) Wakefield and the late William Wallace Wakefield . Marty was a graduate of the Connecticut School of Electronics. He spent the early years of his career at UNIMAX, and then later partnered with his mom, Sylvia, in driving success at their company Wakefield Interiors and Flooring. Most recently, he worked for Executive Auto Group. He was a proud and engaged member of the Wallingford Elks 1365. Marty enjoyed long motorcycle rides, playing pool, and touring classic car shows with his friends, brother, and nephew, Chris. The family has great memories of summers spent together with Marty at the family lake house in Holland, MA. He had a special bond with his rescue dogs he welcomed to his home over the years. Later in his adult life, he split his time between Connecticut and his condo in Florida.
Marty is survived by his siblings, Lynn Wakefield Testa and David Wakefield (Ann), five nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he spent a lot of his time with. Marty’s family would like to extend special thanks to Kathy Crisman, Marty’s wonderful friend, for her ongoing support for Marty throughout his battle with cancer.
The visiting hours for Marty will be held on Friday, April 21, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, April 22 at 12 pm at the New Center Cemetery Elm street North Haven. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (https://www.pcf.org) in Marty’s memory
As I sit here listening to a Barrett-Jackson auction, I reflect on how much over the past few years Marty and I always sent pictures back and forth of cars. We would bring back memories of all the cars he and I had…right down to the last picture of my favorite 69 Chevelle I sent him 2 weeks ago..it makes me cry to watch this auction and how much that man loved his cars. I will so miss visiting him in Port Charlotte and going to car shows and remembering the years from high school on.. I am sooo glad he called me out of the blue to connect even as short of a time it was..no one will replace my car buddy.. RIP Marty. I was within weeks of seeing you again, but we will meet again at a car show in the sky! Opal GTs and AMX forever!!!
Dear Marty I wish that I had gotten to see you at one point. I remember us all hanging out together. I will always remember you and will pray for you. Rest in peace-my condolences go out to your wonderful family-until we meet again-Ann Marie Longobardi and family
