Weldon Joseph “Mort” Sturdevant died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sept. 19, 2022. Born Jan. 27, 1931, Weldon was the son of Joseph LeRoy and Hazel Elizabeth Kimble Sturdevant. He was a graduate of Canandaigua Academy and Niagara University. Weldon served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He then returned to Canandaigua, NY where he met his future wife, Carol Elizabeth Callaway, a schoolteacher. The couple married in 1963 and had five children. Weldon’s 30-year career with Travelers Insurance Company took the family from Canandaigua to East Aurora, NY, where they resided for 19 years. After retirement, Weldon and Carol returned to the Canandaigua homestead, and finally moved to Niantic, CT. Weldon was a devoted and loving husband and father who volunteered in his children’s scouting activities, sporting events, and the Catholic church. An avid golfer, he enjoyed weekend rounds with generations of family and league play with high school classmates. Weldon was a meticulous craftsman who relished home improvement and wood working projects. A gifted conversationalist, he amused listeners with his wonderful, dry wit. Weldon is predeceased by his parents and sister, Lenora Tears. He his survived by his wife and children, Elizabeth (William) Pinti, Michael (Adi Lopez), Anne (Ralph) Black, Mark, and Matthew (Susan Curilla) and thirteen grandchildren. A private ceremony will be held in Connecticut, with a Mass of Christian burial in Canandaigua at a later date. Our VCH, Veterans Coffee House meets monthly at the Wallingford and Cheshire Senior Center which not only gives our Vets the chance to socialize but also take part in enjoying a guest speaker which are related to military topics. We were founded in 2017 by Mark Halliday and Robert Boucher. Our Veterans are an exceptional group and our intention is to bring together to socialize, offer assistance and support. At this very difficult time, our group would like to honor the loss of Weldon Sturdevant as a fallen brother. Our military Veterans send out their heartfelt condolences to the Sturdevant family and friends. As an Army Veteran, he had joined an elite group of honorable men and women and our Country will forever be in his debt.
