William F. O’Brien passed away peacefully, December 3rd, in Guilford, at the age of 93. Bill was born in New Haven on June 9th, 1927, son of the late William and Margaret O’Brien. He attended St. Mary’s High School and completed a certificate in banking from the American Institute of Banking. Bill later enlisted in the Navy and served in Japan and Hawaii. When he returned to New Haven, he joined The Second National Bank. Thirty-seven years later he retired from what is now Bank of America as a Vice President. During this time, he was a member of the Civitan Club of Hamden, the Knights of Columbus of North Haven, Plainville Chamber of Commerce and was president of the Plainville Rotary Club. Bill was a long-time parishioner of St. Frances Cabrini, serving on the finance committee. He also served on the finance board for Albertus Magnus College. He was a resident of North Haven for over 60 years.
A long-time athlete, Bill was an avid baseball player. As a pitcher he played for his grammar, high school, Navy, and bank teams. While playing on his Navy team in Hawaii, he was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals. While back home stationed in Albany, he found his next love, golf. Bill played for decades, especially enjoying his Saturday foursome and bank leagues. His ultimate dream was realized when he enjoyed multiple trips to Ireland and playing his favorite course Tralee. Bill was predeceased by his sisters, Catherine Dornfeld and Marguerite Bergers. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Cecelia (Bunny Cassidy) O’Brien, daughter Suzanne O’Brien and her husband Mark Collins and daughter Mary Beth O’Brien. He is also survived by the light of his life granddaughter Caidyn Collins.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Guilford House for caring for Bill in the last 18 months of his life. He will be remembered for his wonderful story telling, humor and warm smile.
